What you will learn

  1. 01Identify the primary conversion chain for each technology.
  2. 02Compare dispatchability, variability and site constraints.
  3. 03Avoid claiming any technology has zero impact.

Core concepts

ResourceConversionDispatchabilityVariabilitySite constraints

01

Different resources, different assets

Solar and wind are variable resources; reservoir hydro, geothermal and some bioenergy configurations can be more dispatchable. Pumped storage shifts energy rather than creating a primary renewable resource. Performance depends on site, design and operating rules.

02

Compare functions, not labels

A useful comparison considers resource evidence, construction lead time, grid contribution, land and water, supply chain, lifecycle emissions, community impacts and decommissioning. Nameplate MW and a generic cost are not enough.

Decision notes

  • 01Capacity factor is not conversion efficiency.
  • 02Renewable does not mean impact-free.
