Clean-energy capital keeps moving toward power systems

Energy investment is still being reshaped by security, electrification and the need to expand power systems. The latest IEA outlook puts clean power, grids, storage and efficiency at the centre of that shift.

What happened

The IEA expects worldwide energy investment to reach USD 3.4 trillion in 2026, a new high. Around USD 2.2 trillion is expected to go collectively to renewables, nuclear, grids, storage, low-emissions fuels, efficiency and electrification, compared with about USD 1.2 trillion for oil, natural gas and coal.

The figure is a forecast and covers several low-emissions sectors, not renewable generation alone. The IEA also reports that three-quarters of energy investment in 2025 was financed from commercial sources. Access remains uneven: commercial sources financed 85% of energy projects in advanced economies compared with 67% in emerging and developing economies.

Why it matters

The opportunity is large, but capital availability does not remove execution risk. Project sponsors and investors still need clarity on technology, interconnection, counterparties, procurement, construction sequencing, revenue structure and risk allocation. Those conditions shape whether an announced investment becomes a financeable and deliverable asset.

The IEA’s figures also suggest that the energy transition is increasingly a power-system transition: the investment case is expanding from individual generation assets to networks, storage, electrification and flexibility.

Newman alignment brief

Newman aligns its effort with that translation layer between capital and execution. We connect engineering, supply, financing structures and digital workflows so project teams can see what is defined, what is still conditional and what needs validation before a project is presented as ready.

This is an editorial alignment with the IEA’s investment outlook, not a claim that Newman participated in the financing flows or projects referenced.
